Why is sexual harassment rampant in the games industry?

On Behalf of | Jan 2, 2025 | Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is still a big issue in the gaming world, affecting both workers and players. Knowing why it happens can help fix and lessen this serious problem.

Cultural factors

A “bro culture” has long dominated the gaming world, fostering male-focused environments that lead to destructive behavior. This culture often perpetuates sexist jokes, unwanted advances and other forms of harassment. Such a setting can silence those harassed who fear retaliation or losing their jobs.

Lack of diversity

There’s a big gap between men and women in the gaming world. Women make up a small part of the workforce, which can make them feel alone and more likely to face harassment. The lack of diversity also means fewer people speak up for change and advocate for fair policies.

Poor policies and enforcement

Many gaming companies don’t have good anti-harassment policies or enforce them poorly, which allows harassers to act without punishment. Companies must make clear rules and enforce them strictly to create a safer workplace.

Online anonymity

Being anonymous online can make harassers bolder. Harassment survivors often face verbal abuse, explicit messages and other forms of harassment without the perpetrators facing consequences. This anonymity makes it hard to hold people responsible for their actions.

California laws and protections

In California, the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) protects against sexual harassment. Employers must take steps to stop harassment and deal with complaints quickly. This includes clearly stating anti-harassment policies, providing training and ensuring a safe work setting for all workers.

Steps workers can take to avoid sexual harassment at work

To combat sexual harassment in gaming, workers should do the following:

  • Learn: Know your rights and the company’s rules on sexual harassment.
  • Speak up: Tell HR or a trusted boss about harassment.
  • Help others: Stand by coworkers facing harassment and urge them to report it.
  • Keep records: Record any harassment, including dates, times and details.
  • Consider legal help: If needed, talk to a lawyer about your choices and rights.

Workers can help make a safer and fairer workplace by taking these steps.

If you or someone you know is facing sexual harassment at work, talking to a lawyer can give guidance and help for your specific case.
