What to do if you face religious discrimination at work

On Behalf of | Feb 24, 2025 | Discrimination

Religious discrimination happens when an employer treats a worker unfairly because of their religious beliefs or practices. Laws protect employees from this type of treatment, making sure everyone gets equal opportunities no matter their faith. Workplaces should respect different religions and avoid favoritism in hiring, promotions, or day-to-day tasks.

Knowing your rights

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically Title VII, makes it illegal for employers to discriminate based on religion. This law applies to most workplaces with at least 15 employees. Employers must allow reasonable religious accommodations, such as schedule changes, dress code exceptions, or prayer breaks, unless it causes serious problems for the business.

What to do if you experience discrimination

If you believe you are facing religious discrimination, keep a record of the incidents. Write down the date, time, and details of what happened, along with who was involved. The first step is usually reporting the issue to a manager or the human resources department. If this does not lead to a fair solution, you may need to file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which investigates workplace discrimination claims.

How to seek fair treatment

If the problem continues, legal action might be necessary. Employees who win a discrimination case may receive back pay, job reinstatement, or compensation for emotional distress. Speaking with an employment lawyer can help workers understand their legal options and decide the right course of action.

Creating a respectful and fair workplace benefits everyone. Addressing religious discrimination helps ensure that all employees feel included and valued. Standing up for workplace rights can lead to a more positive and equal work environment for all.
