Gender discrimination is more common when women are a minority

Look at your current workplace. Do you feel like there are more men than women?

If so, it is very important to note that women in these workplaces, which are dominated by male workers, reported more instances of gender discrimination than women in workplaces where the breakdown was more equal between male and female workers.

One such issue is that many women felt like they had fewer chances to climb the corporate ladder or that getting ahead was more difficult for them. This could be because a male supervisor would be more likely to promote a male worker, rather than a female worker, for instance. Women felt like their gender unfairly held them back.

There is also some evidence that women may find it harder just to get hired in the first place. When men were asked if their workplace had more male workers than female workers, about 44% of them said that was the case. On the other side, a mere 19% attested that there were more women than men.

In the past, most industries were dominated by men simply because they tended to work more often on the whole. In recent decades, though, female workers have made great strides and are far more likely to be part of the workforce on a full-time basis. Even so, these statistics show that there are still many areas where they do not see equal representation with their male co-workers.
